"This is determination! It's about forging your own path through the dark and desolate wastelands!" — Giorno, inspired by Mista's unwavering resolve, Chapter 514: White Album, Part 6
Giorno Giovanna's early life was marred by unhappiness and isolation due to relentless bullying and the abuse inflicted by his stepfather. Consequently, he initially displayed a cold and indifferent demeanor toward others, deeming himself unworthy due to the mistreatment he endured. Those who knew him might have anticipated that he would grow up to become a twisted individual. However, Giorno's life took a transformative turn when he befriended an injured gangster he had rescued. As the gangster shielded Giorno from those who wronged him in return for his assistance, Giorno began to learn the value of trust in people. Since that pivotal moment, he has evolved into a more self-assured and compassionate individual.
Giorno harbors a profound aspiration of becoming a "Gang-Star." One of his defining traits, which he shares with his peers, is his unwavering resolve, a quality often described as his ability to make crucial decisions without hesitation and see them through, even when confronted with pain, sorrow, or tragedy. Throughout Part 5 of the story, Giorno's determination is evident as he willingly endures injuries in the heat of battle if it means gaining an advantage. He is an ambitious individual who seizes every opportunity to inch closer to his ultimate goal of becoming a "Gang-Star." Upon joining forces with Passione gangster Bruno Bucciarati, Giorno wastes no time infiltrating the organization to steadily ascend its ranks. His assassination of Polpo, for instance, was a calculated move aimed at securing Bucciarati's promotion. Later, Giorno even attempts to directly approach the Boss of Passione and devises a plan to track him.
Despite his serious demeanor and unwavering commitment to his mission and goals, Giorno occasionally entertains more mundane thoughts, such as his appreciation for a delicious margherita pizza from Naples, right before encountering the threat of Notorious B.I.G. Giorno typically approaches situations with a calm demeanor and maintains exceptional composure, even when facing dangers he may not fully comprehend. Koichi, one of his allies, describes Giorno as possessing a "shining serenity" in place of the apprehension most people would feel. However, he can become anxious when circumstances take a turn for the worse. While Giorno rarely succumbs to anger, there are moments when he displays a controlled, if not intense, fury toward certain adversaries. At his most stressed, Giorno becomes desperate for solutions to problems, expressing his distress through vocal outbursts and perspiration. Nevertheless, he never lets panic drive him to reckless or impulsive actions.
In his interactions with others, Giorno treats people according to the respect he believes they deserve, which he determines based on their beliefs and actions. He appears to inherit traits from both Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando, showing the former's kindness and consideration toward peers and allies and the latter's ruthlessness when dealing with enemies. Giorno possesses a compassionate nature and is inclined to assist those who have shown kindness to him or others, even if it means bending or breaking the law. For instance, he was a petty thief when he first met Koichi, bribing airport security guards before pilfering Koichi's luggage. Overall, Giorno adheres to his personal moral code without compromise. He places immense value on life and strives to prevent harm to others whenever possible, even if it means putting himself in danger. He firmly believes that true resolve does not encompass sacrificing one's life for the sake of others, a sentiment revealed during his battle with Ghiaccio alongside Mista. In many instances, he willingly places himself in harm's way and makes himself the target of injury if doing so can aid his allies. These actions are
