This bronze medal is dedicated to the Portuguese national epic "Os Lusíadas" on its 400th anniversary in 1972.

On the back are the words: "For others whose fame has fluctuated so wildly and whose necks have never been tamed, we warn you that it is time for you to give us great credit

100th anniversary of the publication of "Os Lusiadas"

An explanation from Wikipedia:

Os Lusíadas (Portuguese pronunciation: [uʒ luˈzi.ɐðɐʃ]), usually translated as "The Lusiads", is a Portuguese epic poem written by Luís Vaz de Camões[1] (c. 1524/5 – 1580) and first published in 1572 was widely considered the most important work of Portuguese-language literature and is often compared to Virgil's Aeneid (1st century BC). The work celebrates the discovery of a sea route to India by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1469–1524). The ten cantos of the poem are written in Ottava Rima and comprise a total of 1,102 stanzas.[2]

Written in the Homeric style, the poem mainly focuses on a fantastic interpretation of the Portuguese voyages of discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries. Os Lusíadas is often considered the national epic of Portugal,[2] just as Virgil's Aeneid was for the ancient Romans or Homer's Iliad and Odyssey were for the ancient Greeks. It was written while Camões was in exile in Macau[3] and was first printed in 1572, three years after the author's return from India.[2]
