Beschreibung

Portuguese 200 Reis, minted in 1788 during the reign of King Maria I and Peter III of Portugal.

Coin Details:

Obverse:

• Inscription: "IN HOC SIGNO VINCES" ("In this sign you will conquer")

• Motif: A cross with four flowers in the quadrants – this is the so-called Cross of the Order of Christ, which often appears on Portuguese coins.

• This religious inscription originally comes from a vision of Constantine the Great.

Reverse:

• Year: 1788

• Value: 200 Reis

• Crown above a coat of arms: This is the Portuguese national coat of arms with five small shields, each with five points (symbolizing the five wounds of Christ) – surrounded by elaborate decoration.

• Inscription (partially visible): "MARIA I. D. G. PORT. ET ALG. REGINA" (Mary I, by the Grace of God Queen of Portugal and the Algarve)

Special features:

• The eyelets on the coin indicate that it was worn as a piece of jewelry – for example, as a pendant.

• This practice was not uncommon in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially for colonial or religious symbols.

• The material is usually cupronickel or silver, depending on the condition and actual minting.

Historical context:

Mary I ruled Portugal from 1777 to 1816. The coin therefore dates from her early reign. The "Cross of the Order of Christ" refers to the close connection between the Portuguese royal family and Christian symbolism – including the influence of the Knights Templar, whose successor organization was the Order of Christ.
